Decoding the ‘Millionaire Mind'

Tanned, streetwise and laidback, T Harv Eker speaks in soundbites: “Every master was once a disaster”, and “People don’t make money. People earn money.” Dressed in a Hawaiian shirt, the author of Secrets of the Millionaire Mind: Mastering the Inner Game of Wealth and owner of mobile business school Peak Potentials Training looks like he spends more time on the beach than in a boardroom. Eker claims he can tell anyone, within five minutes of meeting the person, how much money the person has the potential to make. “Each of us has a personal money blueprint — a limit on how much money you can have. It is the root cause of financial success or failure,” he declared in an interview late last month. “Donald Trump could lose all his money, and make it back and more, his blueprint is set to unlimited. Lottery winners tend to lose all they’ve won very quickly. Their blueprint is set to low.”

Eker is in Malaysia from today till Sunday to conduct his three-day “Millionaire Mind Intensive” seminar, in which he resets participants’ money blueprint to “high”. He will also examine five critical ways in which rich people think differently from the crowd.Toronto-born Eker discovered his own money blueprint through personal experience. With a US$2,000 (RM7,000) credit card loan, he opened “one of the first fitness stores in North America” and turned it into a chain within two-and-a-half years. He did not name the store.He sold the business in 1987 for US$1.6 million, and then lost it all. “It was serendipitous. I looked at my bank balance and it was exactly the same as it was two years ago. Now in fitness, each person has a ‘set point’ on their weight. It has to do with metabolism and the number of fat cells they have. I was looking at my financial ‘set point’,” he noted. Unwilling to accept his financial “set point”, or what he now calls “money blueprint”, Eker set about changing it.According to him, the money blueprint is ingrained in an individual through upbringing, society and parents. But it can be identified and changed. “I went to seminars and learned the ‘accelerated learning method’, which I used on myself, and things started to change. That’s how the ‘millionaire mind’ concept came about,” he explained.

His new business, Peak Potentials Training, earned a revenue of US$50 million last year. While the company runs many courses, its keystone seminar is the “Millionaire Mind Intensive”. The programme incorporates techniques from the accelerated learning method, which stresses “high impact, high frequency and ongoing support”.Eker said the “Millionaire Mind Intensive” course aims to reprogramme one’s “hardware” from “cellular memory”. But you, the “hardware”, have to be present at the seminar. “You can’t do this just by reading the book,” he said, adding that the programme has given rise to more than 200,000 success stories. When the course was held in Malaysia last year, it attracted about 5,000 people. The current seminar is sold out. To Eker, getting rich is entirely about “who you are”, not about capability or opportunity. “Financial success doesn’t come from IQ. There are people who are just too smart to be financially successful because they don’t do much.

Thinkers are not doers. If you don’t do, you don’t get,” he declared. “It doesn’t take much to not succeed. But to succeed, you must be a more determined, bigger and more courageous person.”For example, he believes the downturn is a great time to “go shopping” because the economy will eventually recover. “What goes down must come up. When? Eventually! Rich people think long term, poor people think short term.” People who fail to seize this opportunity are acting out of fear, which is natural, but it stops you from being rich, he said. “Thoughts lead to feelings, which lead to actions, which lead to results. If you take out actions, you don’t get the results.”

THE recent strong market rally caught many investors by surprise again.
Most investors, including some analysts, predicted earlier that it was just a bear market rally. They have been hoping the market will turn down again. Unfortunately, it has been moving up strong without looking back.
For investors who have not invested during the recent low in March 2009, they are getting very worried as they are not benefitting from the recent rally. They may even wonder whether they should jump in now in order not to miss the boat.
Another group of investors, who have managed to catch some stocks at cheap prices during the previous market low, are also facing the dilemma of whether to lock in their gains now or continue to hold on to their gains. Some even regretted selling their stocks too early last month.
We all know that it is very difficult, in fact impossible, to predict stock market movement. Most investment gurus will refuse to time the market.
Howard Kahn and Cary Cooper published a book titled “Stress in the Dealing Room” in 1993. According to their surveys done on 225 dealers, 73.8% of them suffered from fear of “misreading the market.” Most dealers have the same problem of acquiring and handling information.
We believe that in order to do well in stock investing, we need to know ourselves, especially in controlling our emotion on greed and fear.
Due to information overloading, our emotion is highly influenced by the news that we read. Each time we feel that the market is getting bullish and time to buy stock, the overall market will collapse the moment we enter.
On the other hand, the moment we fear that it will drop further and we have decided to cut losses, we will notice the market will recover after that. Most of the time, the prices of stocks that we sold were at the lowest of the recent fall.
In order to control our greed and fear, we need to ask ourselves whether the market has discounted the news that we have received.
For example, many analysts have been bullish lately, having the opinion that the worst may be over for the market based on the recent economic indicators which showed that the overall economy may have stopped contracting or is on its way to recovery.
Nevertheless, the recent strong market rally would have discounted this bullish news. In fact, we need to ask ourselves whether the current stock prices can be supported by the fundamentals for certain listed companies.
In our experience, in most cases, the moment we feel like buying stocks is the best time to sell them while the moment that we feel like selling them is in fact the best time to buy. We can apply this contrarian theory quite successfully in most periods.
Sometimes, if we are taking in too much contradicting information and, as a result, get confused over the market direction, we feel that the best strategy is to stay away from the market until we have a better and clearer picture of the overall market or the economic situation.
We should not be influenced by other opinions.
There are times that we need to follow our heart. Sometimes, our hearts try to warn us from taking hasty investment decisions. However, we refuse to follow our intuition but instead, choosing to get influenced by others or the information that we read and ending up making mistakes.
In conclusion, we need to maintain our concentration.
We should not be led by the market sentiments regardless whether it is on the way up or crashing down fast. We need to go back to the fundamental of economic situation and the companies’ performance and future prospects.
One way to minimise the feeling of regret is to stagger our purchase and selling. We will only know the peak when the market starts turning downwards and vice versa. Therefore, by staggering, we will have an averaging effect rather than taking a one-time hit, especially if it is at the wrong timing.

5. The love for writing
You love to write and share it with the whole world about what you have written. You can have a blog to store all your great masterpieces, be it the next ‘Harry Potter’ series or simply poems and short stories that you have written. Mind you, someone might approach you to publish your work if you are lucky!
6. Freelancing portfolio
If you have a website dedicated to your services, that would be great but if you just want a small space on the web to promote your portfolio, a blog would be convenient and easy to set up. Whether you want to showcase your latest designs or writing samples, create a blog and spread them around to your potential clients and friends.

KYLIE Anne Chapman was born in Australia but spent her first few years in a Chinese school in Kuala Lumpur, until she was whisked back to Perth for the next few years, before recently returning to the place she had visited many times over the years.
“I have always wanted to come back ever since I moved away.
“There’s always something to do here, and I love the nightlife.
Good experience: Chapman said that modelling was challenging and had taught her a lot.
“Plus most of my family is here,” the 23-year-old model and host, who has been living in KL for about a year now, said.
Chapman, who is of Chinese and Australian parentage, is the resident host of Mad About Dodgeball (MAD) events and looks forward to the many events planned for this year.
“I enjoy doing things that help people in any way, especially kids. Dodgeball is a great sport that’s going to be a big thing and I’m happy to be a part of it,” said Kylie, who is fluent in Mandarin and speaks conversational Cantonese.
“Mandarin was my first language, I spoke it until I was about six,” the commerce graduate said.
“I was this white kid who spoke Chinese and I was a bit of an outcast.
“Then, when I moved to Australia I was this Chinese kid who didn’t speak English,” she added, laughing.
Since returning to KL, Chapman hasn’t had much trouble adjusting to life back here, except sleeping in an air-conditioned room and waking up thirsty, and enjoys the release modelling gives her.
“It’s just an escape, pretending to be someone else for a little while. It’s very relaxing,” she said of her modelling stints.
“Of course, it’s challenging as well. I’ve had to get used to rejection and it’s made me a lot stronger and thick-skinned,” she said.
What do you like about KL?
The mamak stalls – I like that I have access to food any time I want. The taxis! You can hail one down anywhere and they’ll take you wherever you want.
What do you dislike about KL?
The driving, it’s a bit aggressive for me. Sometimes it feels like if I put my indicator on, people are less likely to let me through.

More M’sians seek additional sources of income

PETALING JAYA: Tay, 46, a sales manager at a local manufacturing company, has been forced to take unpaid leave for a week this month.
“My salary has been reduced by about 25% as a result of the unpaid leave and benefits such as handphone, petrol and entertainment allowances have been cut by half,” he told StarBiz.

Tay, who declined to give his full name, said that with demand not showing any signs of recovery in the near term, he was prepared to accept further pay cuts.
“My wife recently took a course and just started a part-time business offering nail art and treatment services from home. This additional income proves useful at times like these,” he added.
Like Tay’s wife, more Malaysians are seeking additional sources of income to cope with the current economic slowdown and higher cost of living.
Nirmala Paramaswaran, 27, a team leader at an IT outsourcing company in Cyberjaya, is selling food items such as nasi lemak and sandwiches.
“Demand from my colleagues has been great and the extra income is handy as daily necessities have become more expensive,” she told StarBiz.
Nirmala, who enjoys cooking, said the venture had also been a good learning experience as she was able to improve her culinary skills based on her customers’ feedback.
Many people are also drawn to seek a second income to sustain a comfortable standard of living.
Samantha Chin, 28, a technical support executive at an insurance company who aspires to buy an apartment for her family, earns up to RM1,000 a month providing Web page design services to small and medium-scale enterprises.

“The additional income has increased my savings considerably and would enable me to make my purchase much sooner than I had hoped for. However, orders have fallen slightly in recent times,” she said.
Meanwhile, Great Eastern Life Assurance (M) Bhd senior group sales manager Reginald Yoganathan Hunt said a good part-time insurance agent with more than five years of experience can make up to RM6,000 in recurring commission.
“The insurance business can yield lucrative income even on a part-time basis, provided the agent is commited,” he said, adding that he had 16 part-time agents in his group.
Talent2 International Ltd director for South Asia Leigh Howard said the current job market in Malaysia was definitely slowing.
“Several multinational corporations have blanket hiring freezes although they would continue hiring for specialist skills,” he said, adding that the manufacturing sector appeared to be having a tough time as retrenchments loomed, but they were still looking for higher-grade skills as well.
“The current economic climate may also see wages stalling while the cost of living continues to rise,” he added.
Howard said that it was possible for employees to seek a second income but they should first check their current employer’s policies.

“Specific permission may be required and potential conflict of interest declared. It depends on the situation. The rule is, make sure a second job would not jeopardise your current one,” he said.
On the downside, a part-time job could be tiring and leave one with less time to spend with family and friends, Howard said.
“Also, look out for hidden expenses such as transport costs,” he added.
Malaysian Trades Union Congress secretary-general G Rajasekaran said there was no restriction on workers pursuing part-time jobs except for certain key or high-risk employment positions.
“In fact, in view of the rising cost of living, it was recently announced that government staff would be allowed to take on part-time jobs, but for a limited number of hours per day,” he said.

As the recession bites harder some find unconventional ways to get spending money while others show their meaner side.

WHAT was an ungracious act in a train has turned the spotlight on just how much stress the current financial havoc is putting on Singaporeans.

The news website, Asia One, kicked off its report of the encounter by saying: “Desperate times call for depraved measures. The financial crisis might have hurt more than just our wallets.”

It occurred last Sunday, when a train commuter refused to give up his seat to a pregnant woman even when he was asked. Instead, he blamed it on the tough life, reported The Straits Times’ news portal.

The episode was photographed by an eyewitness, who quoted him as saying, ‘Life is already full of suffering, why should I reward her (the pregnant woman) for bringing one more life into this world?’

The furore centred on his ill manners and ignored his reference to ‘suffering life’.

Some believe it should not be dismissed out of hand and that the uncivil behaviour could actually reflect his despondent mood over the economic crisis.

“Singaporeans react differently to a crisis. Not everyone can articulate his thoughts rationally under pressure,” said one writer.

The man’s allegation about stress is, however, not without basis.

The majority of Singaporeans are coping well, striving to survive these hard times, keep jobs and preserve assets. Not all will succeed.

The stronger characters see it as an opportunity for a better future or to buy cheap, but for a segment of the society morale has sagged and a bit of lethargy has set in.

A forum recently started a discussion on unscrupulous retailers fleecing customers in Singapore, despite its reputation as a shoppers’ paradise.

A woman tourist said when her daughter wanted to buy a new digital camera, the salesman demanded S$30 to have the international guarantee stamped. She stood her ground and was spared paying.

Widely-travelled ‘mybingoh’ wrote, “Every time I returned to Singapore, I found people brasher and outright peevish.”

In sporadic instances, salespersons had shown distaste for their job and did not bother to hide it from the customers.

“I hear from the man in the street they are all trying hard to cope with the escalating costs of living and the sky-high rental premiums,” one said.

He gave several other examples: a hawker adamantly demanding $4 for a pineapple, a salesgirl at a camera repair shop ignoring a customer while chatting on the phone and specialist doctors charging exorbitant fees.

A retail businessman put the main cause in one word, money. In recent boom years, rents in the central areas had been skyrocketing – by as much as 50%-60% a year.

The recession has forced retailers to keep wages low, which in turn resulted in unhappy staff and customer service.

Others disagreed and attributed it to a spoiled generation following decades of prosperity.

“In certain jobs, we don’t have a good work culture, unlike Thailand,” one food centre operator said, explaining why he had to rely on China workers.

In a recession, service standards should in fact improve because workers generally need to work harder to keep their jobs, he contended.

Within the next 12-18 months, jobs will remain the biggest worry for Singaporeans.

Thousands of fresh graduates will come out of universities at home and abroad to start hunting for work at a critical time. They will be joined by youths from Asia’s job-hungry countries.

Manpower Minister Gan Kim Yong last week warned people to expect deterioration over the next few months, with more Singaporeans losing their jobs.

“There will be higher retrenchment,” he said. So far, unemployment has stayed at 2.2%, although 2,000 more workers were retrenched in the recent quarter.

The more pessimistic analysts talk of a job tsunami, with decline across Singapore’s entire economy, including manufacturing, shipping, finance, tourism, retailing and property.

Yuppies seem to be doing reasonably well – so far. This breed is not good at being thrifty, compared with the older generation. Generally, they do not have a sense of urgency to save, so some of them are using unconventional ways to make spending money.

One ‘university’ girl offered to sell her soiled underwear while another – a 17-year-old – offered her virginity to the highest bidder.

The tabloid New Paper just ran a story about engineers, teachers and other professionals working as bar dancers at night-clubs, partly for fun but mostly for the extra dollars.

The newspaper exclaimed in a headline, “Is that my housing agent dancing on the bar?”

This market meltdown has struck the government and the wealthy just as badly.

The billionaires and wealthy property developers have seen their fortunes decimated, at least on paper, by as much as 60% since early this year.

“Some of these poor souls are down to their last one or two hundred million dollars,” joked a remisier.

In worst shape are Singapore’s state reserves, once estimated to be about US$330bil, much of it invested at home and overseas. Today values in the tens of billions are believed to have been erased.

In Singapore more than elsewhere, if the wealthy suffer so will the poor. That could mean less investment and employment as well as a drop in tax revenue for public services.

In fact, the government here is facing one of its toughest political tests since independence. It has to strike a fine balance between giving big business a free hand to cut costs to stay healthy and placating voters who may want just the opposite.

On the ground, these common folks want more spending by the corporations so they can have a better life.

Malaysians reducing purchases, Americans and Japanese too

KUALA LUMPUR: More than half of Malaysians have reduced “impulse” purchases and postponed major life decisions, reports StarBiz's Yeow Pooi Ling.

The AP meanwhile reported from Washington that scared and out of money, Americans stopped buying everything from cars to corn flakes in the July-September quarter, ratcheting back spending by the largest amount in 28 years and jolting the national economy into what could be the most painful recession in decades.

Yeow Pooi Ling reports that Malaysians are delaying getting married, having children, moving house, changing jobs or furthering their education due to the current downbeat economic conditions, according to a recent poll by Synovate Research.

Nevertheless, 45% were optimistic that the weak economy would improve soon while only 22% thought the economy was going downhill and that the domestic economy would worsen before it recovers.

Synovate’s survey, conducted two months ago, reviewed the spending habits and perceptions of Malaysians on the economy over six months to August. The survey was also done in Japan, Taiwan, Brazil, the US, France, Russia, Turkey and South Africa.

Synovate Malaysia managing director Steve Murphy said Malaysians had a more positive outlook on the economy compared to developed countries.

For example, almost two-thirds of Americans (63%), Japanese (63%) and French (64%) felt their economy would get worse before rebounding, he said after a media briefing yesterday.

“Malaysians’ optimism is merited as the banking system is regulated,” Murphy said.

Nonetheless, given the barrage of negative news over the last two months, more Malaysians could feel more pessimistic by now, he added.

In the six months to August, 36% of Malaysians were saving less, 25% investing less and generally reducing their spending on basic necessities and especially luxury items.

This was attributed to the lower disposable income given that food and energy prices had increased while salary saw little difference, Murphy said.

Almost half the respondents were earning almost the same as before, 26% were taking home less salary while 15% saw a pay rise during the six-month period.

Top of the list of items that Malaysians were willing to give up were holidays and leisure travel (18%), branded items (13%), eating out (12%) and purchases of big-ticket items (12%) like houses and cars.

Murphy said instead of getting a new car, the average Malaysian was more likely to consider a second-hand, or a lower range, vehicle.

Some 31% of Malaysians deemed to be affluent, i.e, those with monthly income of RM4,000 and above, indicated they had the intention to buy a new car in the next 12 months.

Affluent Malaysians have continued to invest this year with investment in unit trusts and mutual funds increasing to 40% in first half of the year from 29% a year ago.

Investments in residential and commercial property investment rose to 29% from 21% in the same period.

Murphy said the affluent believed that they would be cushioned during tough times.

“But this is a small segment of society. The majority of people would tighten their belts,” he added.

Synovate surveyed 1,000 respondents from urban and rural areas, as well as major cities in the country.

Meanwhile, Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) managing director Datuk Syed Hafiz Syed Abu Bakar said the automaker had yet to feel the change in consumer sentiment, as sales numbers for its economical vehicles remained strong for September and October.

“October hasn’t ended yet but about 15,000 (units) have been booked so far,” he told StarBiz in a telephone interview.

Mutiara Goodyear Development Bhd, which develops mostly mid-range properties, had seen a take-up rate of over 70% for its Prima Avenue commercial project in Petaling Jaya since the launch in mid-August, said chief executive officer Kee Cheng Teik.

Prima Avenue comprises two towers of office suites and retail lots selling at RM170,000 onwards with a total gross development value of RM120mil.

Buyers were mainly property investors and young entrepreneurs starting their business, he said.

But health food company Hai-O Enterprise Bhd is seeing weaker demand from its Chinese customers.

Financial controller Hew Von Kin said Chinese medicated halls, which got their supplies from Hai-O, were stocking less in anticipation of slower demand.

If you want to earn more, work less, and have a decent retirement, you're going to have to start creating income streams that do not require your direct involvement. Whether you're just starting your business, or you've been running it a while, the sooner you start thinking about how you are going to shift your business model to create more passive income, the sooner you can achieve personal and financial freedom.
Let's look at two basic types of passive income, and a third type of income that, while technically not passive, is a key strategy for earning more and working less.
Residual Income
Residual income is revenue that occurs over time from work done one time. Some examples include:
· An insurance agent who gets commission every year when a customer renews his policy
· A network marketing or direct sales rep's income from her direct customers when they reorder product every month
· An aerobics instructor who produces a video and sells it at the gyms where she teaches
· A marketing consultant who creates a workbook and sells it in e-book format on the Internet
· A photographer who makes his photos available through a stock photography clearinghouse and gets paid a royalty whenever someone buys one of his images
· A restaurant or retail owner who has grown to the point of hiring a trustworthy manager
As you can see, there are many different ways to generate residual income across a wide variety of businesses. It may be recurring income from the same customers, or the sales of a product to new customers. It may require no personal involvement whatsoever, such as an e-book sold on a web site, or it may require some personal interaction, such as the insurance agent calling the customer to remind them about their renewal and ask them if they want to change any of their coverage. Often, it's something that you can delegate to an assistant.
Note that this is different from merely recurring income. Recurring income may still require your involvement to earn the income, e.g., a coach or consultant on a monthly retainer, or a caterer who delivers lunch every Monday to the local school board. While this "active recurring income" offers welcome stability, it also tends to tie you down, and you still have limits on your earning capacity based on your own personal production capacity.
Leveraged Income
Leveraged income leverages the work of other people to create income for you. Some examples of leveraged income include:
· An e-book author selling her e-book through affiliates who promote the product
· A network marketer who builds a downline and receives commissions on the sales made by people in his downline
· A general contractor who makes a profit margin on the work done by sub-contractors
· Franchising your business model to other entrepreneurs (the ultimate leveraged income)
Again, there are many different models in many different businesses. The key is that you are making money off of other people's labor, rather than primarily your own. Note that leveraged income may or may not also be residual income. When you combine them, that's even better.
Active Leveraged Income
This is a term I use to describe income that requires your direct participation, but that you can make more money by having more people involved. This generally involves a one-time event, such as:
· A seminar or class
· A conference or convention
· Concerts and dance recitals
· Raves and other parties
Although these require your direct participation, your earning potential is much higher than if someone were just paying you a direct hourly rate. Fill a room with 1,000 people paying $50 each and you can cover your facility cost, promotional cost, and staffing fees and still have a nice chunk of change left over.
Applying It
Now is the time to think about how to apply this in your business. Can you create a product that people will buy over and over again? Can you engage others to sell your product? How could you make money off the work of others?
The sooner you answer these questions, the sooner you'll have financial and personal freedom.

Robert P. Miles was in Malaysia for the first time to preach about the investment principles practised by the world’s richest man.
HAVING made his fortune largely through the stock market, Warren Buffet is widely regarded as the world’s greatest investor. Today, he is also the world’s richest man, with a net worth of more than US$62bil, according to Forbes magazine’s 2008 rankings.
Buffett’s success has garnered him a cult-like following among investment professionals and amateurs alike.
This is obvious at his shareholders’ meetings held each year on the first Saturday of May in his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska, in the United States.
Also, many books about Buffett have gone on to become international best-sellers.
“Besides his wealth and success, Buffett is also well known for his philanthropic work. He has taught his shareholders to not just focus on making wealth, but also on distributing it back to the world to help the needy,” says Robert P Miles.
Miles is among those who have written about Buffett. To date, Miles has three titles — 101 reasons to own the world’s greatest investment: Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway; The Warren Buffett CEO: Secret from the Berkshire Hathaway managers; and Warren Buffett wealth: Principles and practical methods used by the world’s greatest investor.
Tagged as a Warren Buffett expert, Miles has become a fixture on the international lecture circuit. He has spoken and conducted workshops in five continents, that is, Asia, Australia, North America, Europe and Africa.
Miles was in Malaysia for the first time last Tuesday to conduct a half-day seminar organised by the Malaysian Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators.
BizWeek catches up with him to gain an insight into what he normally teaches and his opinions about Buffett.
BizWeek: You have travelled to many places conducting seminars. Last Tuesday was your first time doing it in Malaysia. Why was Malaysia never on your list before that?
Miles: Well, I never got invited to come to Malaysia to conduct seminars before this. My coming this time was under the invitation of a friend after I completed my tour of four Asian countries, namely, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore.
What do you teach at your seminars?
I share my observations on Buffett, and my seminars focus on teaching people about his investment and management philosophies. I think he is a genius at both investing and managing.
Buffett is a living proof that it is indeed possible to become extraordinarily wealthy through an honourable way.
He has created wealth by owning businesses through the stock market. And he manages 220,000 employees at his enterprises, with only 19 stationed at his headquarters.
So, Buffett is an interesting case study, not only from the investment standpoint, but also from the management standpoint.
Who are your target audience?
Anyone who is interested in the stock market and in learning how Buffett manages his enterprises. They could range from professionals to individual investors and business students, among others.
The response around the world to the message of Buffett has been good because people are curious about him. They want to study somebody who is the best at investing and the best at managing.
What is your relationship with Buffett?
I am simply, first, a shareholder of his company, Berkshire Hathaway. I am not a spokesperson for the company, though. Neither am I on its payroll nor had Buffett instructed me to conduct seminars.
Secondly, I am an author of three books about Buffett. On my website, you will notice the focus is more on Buffett because it is really all about him. It is not about Robert Miles and how I invest. So, I try not to confuse the two. I am just an observer, a writer and speaker.
How did you develop the credibility you enjoy today of being a Warren Buffett expert?
I think credibility is earned, and people can tell whether or not you know your stuff.
I wrote my first book — 101 reasons to own Berkshire Hathaway – without any intention of publishing it. I started writing the contents of the book as a daily blog posting on fool.com over a period of 101 days.
When I finished, many people from all over the world wanted a compilation of my postings in a book. So, I self-published the book because I never thought publishers would be that interested in what I had written.
My book captured the attention of many soon after hitting the bookshelves because people found out that Buffett actually liked it. A publisher then picked up my book and published it in hardcover and paperback for foreign editions.
Following the success of the first book, I began to work on two other books on my own initiative because I was really passionate about Buffett’s philosophies.
How did you become familiar with the investment and management philosophies of Buffett?
Just by reading his letters, which are available free on his website. There are over 20 years of his letters to his shareholders (whom he regards as his partners) that pretty much explain his methods. Buffett writes to them as if they had been away from the business for a year.
How long have you been studying about Buffett?
For more than 10 years, since I became a shareholder in Berkshire Hathaway in 1995.
When did you begin to develop an interest in him?
When I began to ask myself the questions – who is the best at investing, what can I learn from him and is he available to manage money for me – back in the mid-1990s.
I found the answer in Buffett.
So, I began to invest in Berkshire Hathaway and started attending its annual shareholders’ meetings.
I got to learn so many new things from Buffett that I had never heard of from anyone else, such as: Wall Street will sell you anything that you want to buy; it is the legal pickpocket of the average investor; and it is the only place where people will go there in a Rolls Royce to get advice from people who have gone there by the subway. And I was so impressed.
Have you applied Buffett’s theories on yourself?
Yes, my income is mainly from my personal investments, not so much from my writing or speaking fees. I think one will lose his credibility if he does not make money by following the advice that he is preaching about.
Have you ever thought of just focusing on being a successful investor like Buffett?
My motivation is to share what I have discovered so that people can make up their own mind.
My job enables me to share my passion about Buffett, and by travelling, I get to experience other cultures and meet different people. I think you can learn more about yourself when you are given a comparison, not by being surrounded by people who are like yourself.
In a nutshell, what is Buffett’s way of investing?
It is figuring out what an investment is worth – what is its value – and attempting to buy it cheap. Most people confuse price with value, thinking if the stock price is US$25, then the stock must be worth US$25.
Buffett does not look at the price. He calculates the value, which is basically determined by earnings of an investment, and then figures out the best price to pay for the stock.
Then, he patiently waits for the market to offer him a much attractive price for his holdings.
Buffett strongly suggests that one should not be a stock trader if one has no interest in studying accounting and valuing a business, and does not understand market prices.
That person, according to Buffett, will be better off just buying a low-cost, low-tax, index fund, and dollar-cost average into it over his or her working life to enjoy reasonable returns.
What are the principles behind Buffett’s way of investing?
Buffett’s investing style is influenced by the methods that had been laid out by his college professor Benjamin Graham in a book called The Intelligent Investor. He learnt three important points from the book, which have helped him throughout his investing life. We can also apply them:
Firstly, we need to look at a stock as not just a list on the newspaper. It represents a share of a business. If we think that way, we will have an owner-mentality, rather than a trader-mentality. Then, we will think more about the value of the business, and not the price of it.
Secondly, we have to think that in the stock market, we have a virtual partner, whom Graham called Mr Market.
Every time the stock market opens, Mr Market is either manic or depressed. When he is manic, he wants you to buy his share of the business for twice as much to what you think the business is worth, so you should sell instead.
When he is depressed, he wants to sell you his share of the business for half of what it worth, so you should buy instead. What most people do wrong is they treat Mr Market as their master and follow his mood. But Buffett uses Mr Market as his servant, and does the opposite of what Mr Market wants.
Thirdly, we need a margin of safety, which is the difference between the value and price of an investment. The lower the price of a stock from your valuation, the more margin of safety you have.
Therefore, Buffett likes declining markets because he can get more margin of safety from such markets. In bull markets, however, Buffett will wait patiently on the sidelines.
How can one learn to be an intelligent investor like Buffett?
The stock market is a place where emotions run high as shares are being auctioned off to the highest bidder.
Emotions come into play all the time because people want to win. So they either push up or push down the prices of shares. Many therefore confuse price with value, and could not make the best investment decision.
An intelligent investor is one who is rational. Buffett is a very rational investor because he has learnt to master his emotions.

While four of the five were making a mint on the Internet, Fraser Doherty was doing things the old-fashioned way. In 2002, at the age of 14, Doherty started making jams from his grandmother's recipes in his parents' kitchen in Edinburgh, Scotland. Neighbors and church friends loved them. As word spread, Doherty started receiving orders faster than he could produce them at home, so he rented time at a 200-person food-processing factory several days a month.
Go With The Flow
By age 16, Doherty left school (with his parents' blessing) to work on his jams full time. In early 2007, Waitrose, a high-end supermarket in the U.K., approached Doherty, hoping to sell his Superjam products in their stores. Within months there were Superjam jars on the shelves of 184 Waitrose stores, hoisting Doherty and his business to new heights.
Doherty borrowed 5,000 pounds (about $9,000) from a bank to cover general expenses and more factory time to produce three flavors: Blueberry & Blackcurrant, Rhubarb & Ginger and Cranberry & Raspberry. Tesco (other-otc: TSCDY - news - people ) followed, adding Doherty's products to 300 stores across the U.K. In March, Superjam will launch at Tesco in Ireland.
Last year Superjam hit $750,000 in sales and is on track to double that in 2008 (about 50,000 jars a month). Based on a reasonable valuation multiple of one times revenue--jelly-maker J.M. Smucker (nyse: SJM - news - people ) trades at 1.2 times sales--Doherty's 100% stake is worth in the neighborhood of $1 million to $2 million.
Not bad for a 19-year-old. Doherty's recommendation to other young entrepreneurs: "Have an attitude of adventure, and enjoy the journey."
Double Down
Cameron Johnson truly took that perspective to heart, parlaying one hit into the next. Back in 1994, when he was just 9, Johnson launched his first business out of his home in Virginia, making invitations for his parents' holiday party. By the seasoned age of 11, Johnson had saved up several thousand dollars selling greeting cards. He called his company Cheers and Tears.
But the little guy didn't stop there. At age 12, Johnson offered his younger sister $100 for her collection of 30 Ty Beanie Babies, all the rage at that time. The young entrepreneur quickly earned 10 times that amount by selling the dolls on eBay (nasdaq: EBAY - news - people ). Smelling potential, he contacted Ty and began purchasing the dolls at wholesale with the aim of selling them on eBay and on his Cheers and Tears Web site.
In less than a year, Johnson banked $50,000--seed money for his next venture, My EZ Mail, a service that forwarded e-mails to a particular account without revealing the recipient's personal information. He hired a programmer to flesh out his idea, and within two years My EZ Mail was generating up to $3,000 per month in advertising revenue.
Be Fearless
Johnson still wasn't done. In 1997, he joined forces with two other teen entrepreneurs, Aaron Greenspan and Tom Kho, to create an online advertising company called Surfingprizes.com, which provided scrolling advertisements across the top of users' Web browsers. Those who downloaded the software received 20 cents per hour (a tiny fraction of the value to the advertiser) for the inconvenience of having ads splay across their computer screens.
The boys employed a classic pyramid strategy to spread the service. Users who managed to refer Surfingprizes.com to a new customer would nab 10% of that new person's hourly revenue.
But Johnson and company didn't just sell software--they wanted a piece of that juicy ad revenue too. Their solution: partnering with companies such as DoubleClick, L90 and Advertising.com that could sell the ads for them. Under the agreements, the middlemen would collect 30% of any ad revenue sold, while the three boys split the remaining 70%, out of which they paid those referral fees.
"I was 15 years old and receiving checks between $300,000 and $400,000 per month," says Johnson. At 19, he sold the company name and software (but not the customer database) to an undisclosed buyer. Says Johnson, "Before my high school graduation, my combined assets were worth more than $1 million."
Now just 23, and with other ventures under his belt, Johnson spends his time giving speeches and promoting a new book. "Put yourself out there," he advises. "Don't be afraid of rejection. Don't be afraid to ask anything."
Stick To A Vision
At 15, Catherine Cook and her brother Dave, 17, were flipping through their high school yearbook and came up with the idea to develop a free interactive version online. In 2005, the two convinced their older brother Geoff, a budding Web entrepreneur himself, to invest $250,000 and his time to help them launch MyYearbook.com, a social-networking site based in Skillman, N.J.
Soon after, the Cooks merged with Zenhex.com, an ad-supported site where users post a variety of homemade quizzes, more than doubling the number of eyeballs taking in their site. But when they tried to expand even further, they hit some snags. Potential investors wanted to move the company's headquarters to New York (the Cooks wanted to stay put). They also wanted to have ads appear on users' personal profile pages (the Cooks didn't).
Good thing the Cooks stuck to their vision. By 2006, MyYearbook had raised $4.1 million from the likes of U.S. Venture Partners and First Round Capital. Since then, the site has attracted such advertisers as Neutrogena, Disney (nyse: DIS - news - people ) and ABC; has grown to 3 million members worldwide; and rakes in annual sales in the "seven figures," says Catherine.
How to compete in an industry dominated by MySpace and Facebook? Mine a niche. "[Our site is] specifically for high school students, and we really listen to the suggestions of our members," says Catherine.
While the Cooks decline to discuss the value of their stake in the business, one MyYearbook investor (who agreed to speak only if unidentified) claims the Cooks' chunk is worth "well over $1 million."
Seven figures is real money to anyone, let alone a teenager. Yet despite their heady success, all of these young world-beaters seem to remain--refreshingly--kids at heart. "I'm not driving around in fancy cars," says Doherty. "I'm in it totally for the adventure."

Give readers something new. They should come away with a pleasure of having learnt something from your blog. Give them this pleasure! (This also means bloggers need to work harder to bring in quality content - content which needs to fulfill the aims of your blog.)
Post frequently. In my opinion, you should post frequently if you have good posts or information to share. If none, you can always blog about what you did and what you learnt because your readers can learn through what you learnt!
Maintain focus. This is a good one. It’s easy to stray from the topic of your blog because let’s face it, things get boring after a while. But do not give in to the temptation of wanting to write about other things. For instance, Krista’s soup blog focuses on Chinese soups only. Not Western soups. She says it’s tempting sometimes to talk about other types of soups but it’s also going to be detrimental to her blog readers.
Add visual interest. This is another good point. A lot of blog readers love photos and nothing speaks louder or better than photos. That’s why we use photos when we want to bring a point across. It’s best to make a photo or visual image relevant too.

eBay way to earn a living

KUALA LUMPUR: Chris Chan is a 30-year-old graduate who, like many in her generation, says no to a 9-to-5 office regime and refuses to be a slave to money.
Instead, she is trying to combine work with a balanced life. She has found a suitable income-generating way by selling through eBay.
“I earn about US$1,000 (about RM3,300) a month selling collectibles on eBay. I own my time and I can combine my love for travel with work, since I do need to go overseas to source for supplies,” she said.

Chan: ‘One will need to invest time, money and energy if one wants to make it big in business.’“Selling through eBay is something a person can do to earn an income. Just like any other business, one will need to invest time, money and energy if one wants to make it big,” said Chan, an architecture graduate from Australia.

Chan started selling on eBay during her student days in Australia to earn pocket money. She first started by putting her used handbags and other things on sale online.
“My first sale was exhilarating. It was a pleasant surprise that others actually wanted to buy things I had used. From then, I was interested in eBay business and went through their online course to be a certified power seller,” said Chan.
The certification also allows her to train others on the art of selling professionally and ethically on eBay.

Chan will be sharing her experience at a talk How to Earn Extra Income via eBay and Google at the MCA 9-point party exhibition to be held at Putra World Trade Centre from Jan 18 to Jan 20. Her talk is on Jan 19.

MOST of us work hard and long hours from Monday to Friday, sometimes even on weekends. We wake up early, drive through maddening traffic every day, rush through lunch, battle the same maddening traffic to get home and collapse in front of the TV at the end of the day. We start thinking, “When can I finally have enough money to afford my retirement? Where does all the money go every month? Why isn’t there more of it in my savings account?”
Sound familiar? In fact, people who earn a decent living and still have problems making ends meet are probably in the majority. But you can make your hard-earned ringgit stretch further by adopting a healthier attitude towards money management and becoming a careful spender.
The biggest monetary wastes
First, you need to figure out where your money is going by drawing up a budget. Once you know what you are spending on, it’s surprisingly easier to spend less and save more. This is because a budget helps you to identify the biggest wastes of money.
Extravagant dining: Malaysians just love to eat. As families in Malaysia become more affluent and more air-conditioned food outlets are opened, eating out becomes a social norm and we spend more at restaurants.
Gambling: I read an interesting fact once that the chances of striking it rich at lotteries was slimmer than being hit by terrorists! According to one report, gambling can be more addictive than smoking or drinking and is potentially a silent but quick robber of our savings.
My advice is simple – just stay off gambling altogether except during the occasional festive season get-together with relatives or friends – if you celebrate Chinese New Year, the gambling must end on Chap Goh Meh.
“Premium” coffees: It is okay to treat yourself occasionally with a premium coffeehouse blend. But if going there is part of your routine every other day, I suggest you kick your caffeine addiction and put the savings somewhere else more profitable.
Cigarettes: If you are a heavy smoker, it’s unlikely that you understand the economic significance of a daily packet of cigarettes over a lifetime – presuming, of course, that the smoke you inhale permits you to live a full lifetime.
Say a young man starts smoking a pack a day at the age of 20 and continues until age 70. Assuming the current cost of cigarettes remains the same at RM8.20 (which is most unlikely), the money that has gone up in smoke over 50 years is RM149,650 or RM2,993 per year. If he puts that amount away in a risk-free investment instrument at 4% per annum, after 50 years he would have RM456,932 stacked in his retirement account!
Paying too much interest: Do you routinely pay your credit card balances promptly and in full, so that you are not charged an interest?
Those of you who carry unpaid balances over from month to month may find that you are on your credit card company’s list of super customers. Speak to your bank to structure a loan for you in order to settle those unpaid credit card balances. Manage your credit cards by:
 Paying off your card balance in full every month.
 Using your credit card wisely to take advantage of the 21-day free interest period. Get your credit card company to vary the payment cut-off dates.

In this Christmas and Holiday season, I just want to share a story how an ordinary man can be a millionaire over a Christmas.Ho Ho Ho....

Elmo Shropshire had a day job as a veterinarian in Marin County, Calif., and a side gig as a bluegrass singer when he recorded the holiday song that put him on the map -- and put his vet business out to pasture. The song, "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer," has sold 10 million copies, inspired a music video and a movie, and made Shropshire a millionaire five times over.

Shropshire first heard the saga of the tipsy grandma and the renegade reindeer after bumping into songwriter Randy Brooks, who wrote the piece, at a bluegrass performance. Convinced that the ballad suited his twangy voice and comic singing style, he shelled out $500 to record it himself and another $700 to make 500 singles. "Grandma" aired on a San Francisco radio station in 1979 and caused an instant ruckus. "Kids were calling in and saying, 'Play it, play it,'" says Shropshire.

Despite the enthusiastic reception, he couldn't find a record company to take "Grandma" national. Nevertheless, the song was frequently requested over the next several holiday seasons. Says Shropshire, "It was one of the few songs in history where public clamor rather than company hype drove demand." Shropshire went for broke in 1983, investing $30,000 to produce his own "Grandma" music video and $10,000 to make an album featuring the song. We are just a few days away from Christmas, I started to wind down for the holidays.In fact, as I write this editorial I'm on a flight to Sarawak, East Malaysia to attend the one of my client’s Christmas Party. (The one benefit of having a lot of friends and business network I get to have a few Christmas parties to attend!:-)

Once I am done with that party, I am going to fly straight back to Kuala Lumpur, tie up some loose ends and then dedicate my time to my family over the holidays.And that brings me to the thought I want to share with you today...As entrepreneurs, we work hard all year long. It's easy to bury ourselves in our work and lose sight of why we're working so hard, right?I mean, we choose to be entrepreneurs so that we have flexibility in our schedules, the ability to take time off when we want, and the financial means to do what we want when we want.And yet why do so many of us lose sight of this, and morph into workaholics who are constantly trading the precious little time we have with our family and friends for long hours in front of our computers?

I know success doesn't come easy... and if you are starting and growing a business, it can be a lot more than a 9-5 job.

Being a millionaire isn't what it used to be -- but it sure beats not being one. Just ask the 8.2 million U.S. households -- an all-time record -- that had a net worth of more than $1 million in 2004, excluding the value of their primary residence. That was a 33% increase over the previous year, reports a survey by TNS Financial Services. The surge was driven mostly by consistent investing in the stock market. But there are other ways to make a million -- start a business, invest in real estate, put yourself in the right place at the right time. Kiplinger's sought out people who did all those things and more. We found that although they had taken different routes, they followed a pattern; you might call that pattern the nine habits of highly successful millionaires. And all of them had a 10th trait in common: They never lost sight of their goal.

'Do whatever it takes'

Marco and Sandra Johnson started out saving lives in their community of Lancaster, Calif., and ended up running a multimillion-dollar business whose customers come from across the United States.
The idea was born on the job. Marco, a full-time firefighter and paramedic, would come home from an incident and complain to Sandra that lives might have been saved if bystanders had been able to administer first aid. At the time, the Johnsons were trying to have a second child, and Marco was particularly upset when "children died unnecessarily because no one at the scene knew CPR," says Sandra.

In 1997, they began offering CPR and first-aid classes to local businesses. Sandra handled scheduling and other arrangements, and Marco taught classes between shifts at the firehouse. At first they borrowed material and equipment and brought it to each site; after a few months they scraped together enough money to rent a 400-square-foot office. The business started to take off when workers whose jobs require CPR certification, such as schoolteachers and bus drivers, sought them out. Then students asked them to start training emergency medical technicians because local junior colleges had a two-year waiting list for EMT classes.

Within a few years, the Johnsons had become accredited for EMT training and moved their Antelope Valley Medical College to bigger quarters. "Everything was happening fast," says Marco. Riding the momentum took seven-day-a-week stamina. Marco alternated shifts at the firehouse with classroom duty, and Sandra was "always on the phone" setting up appointments. The couple didn't want to take out a business loan, so they plowed their own income into the school and sometimes put off making mortgage payments on their house to pay their employees. Says Marco: "There were times when it was a gut check. We looked at each other and said, 'What did we get ourselves into?'" Now the Johnsons can breathe easier. In 2004, their school was expected to pull in revenues of $7.5 million, and their corporate clients have included businesses from Boeing to Burger King. That boom in business has given the couple the means to own several houses and to treat their extended family -- a group of 12 -- to vacations in Hawaii.

The lure of lucre can take the unsuspecting dude down dangerous paths.
Humans are a greedy lot. This seems as good a time as any to bring this up, given the number of SMS scams that people are falling prey to these days. Are we so desperate and gullible that we believe money comes free at the drop of a hat?
The Internet and cellular phone are quite possibly two of the greatest inventions of the past half-century, but every boon comes with its banes. Armed with a mobile phone and an Internet line, tricksters can reach across the globe, which they have, elevating the arts of persuasion and deception to new heights in the process.
My first experience of an attempted Internet scam was email from someone who claimed to be working clandestinely on behalf of a deposed or deceased dictator or emperor (I forget which) somewhere in Africa or the Middle East. If I helped him and his associates transfer aforementioned dictator’s illegal millions out of their country, I would make a few millions bucks in commission. I was disbelieving from the start, but I’ve heard of trusting fools fall for this.
Over the past decade, I have received a few dozen similar missives; I used to read them for amusement, but that’s wearing thin these days.
My take is that if you’re greedy enough to be lured by an offer to make millions off a “deposed” ruler, or whatever, via some illegal money transfer, you deserve what you get – nothing.
You are responsible for your actions – as the saying goes, if it’s too good to be true, it probably is. I’ve never believed in such a thing as a free lunch, much less being singled out from millions of Internet users for some golden opportunity of a lifetime.
I’ve read of people losing a few hundred thousand bucks after being tempted by offers via SMS or calls from con artistes working for syndicates – it seems we’re reading about these unfortunate victims just about every day!
Listen – just say “No” ? that’s my instinct, on the phone or when approached by anyone. The more you listen, the more you get sucked into a vortex of uncertainty and confusion, and then, at one point, your fundamentally-greedy self takes charge. That’s the point of no return and as is sure a way as any of burning your hard-earned money.
Sometimes, even respectable companies dangle the carrot of “free” money in front of you, just to keep you interested. I used to subscribe to a well-known magazine but stopped a couple of years ago. However, because my particulars are still inescapably trapped in their database, I get regular snail mail enticing me to join their contest and stand a chance to win pot-loads of cash.
I’m not saying this is a scam – indeed, the company is too well-known and respected to perpetrate anything close to a scam, and I don’t doubt a select few have take home some winnings.
It’s just that each time I get snail mail from this company, I’m made to believe I’m just two steps away from becoming a millionaire – all I need do is wait a few days, fill out forms, wait some more, buy something, wait some more, fill more forms, buy something else ? hey, wait, there’s a pattern here!
I obliged the first time, but my patience ran out the second time around; unfortunately, two or three years down the road and I’m still being subjected to such mail. Not that I respond, even if the mail continues to arrive with clockwork regularity. I just don’t have the time and patience to call these people to tell them to get me off their mailing list – who knows what they’ll try to sell me over the phone!

There are quite a number of newbie people whom I met or heard online often come in rambling about minor stuff..like will this technique work? Will I be bombarded with hidden cost? Is this a scam? How to withdraw from paypal or even moaning about recent petty purchases and bla bla bla..

These people often spend countless amount of time researching about the nitty gritty things that won’t make them money, and worst still often getting advice from others who exhibit the same attitude like themselves.I ask you, what’s the point of all these? Yes, you may find that there will be a scam in this, or that technique work, but what’s next? Will that make you any wiser? Will you actually implement your new found working technique? How all those time spent in that research done will going to help in your future online entrepreneurial stunt? If you don't like the backend offer presented, then move on dude....

C’mon guys. I’m sorry to be blunt. But you have to use your head man. If you want to be in this Internet business, then for goodness sake treat this as your business. A business with good mission (your purpose), leadership (you), team (outsourcing), and the most important of all, your capital to fund the cost and expenses is very important.Do not try to be cheap by moaning all the petty losses you’ve made online or those purchases you’ve made online. Without a good working capital which you need to set aside to start things off, there will be many times when you’ll be doing the wrong things, like not outsourcing your stuff when you should, failing to get the right info products from the right advisors in your niche. Say if you are into web publishing business, don’t go into stuff that will not do you good for now ie how to make money from selling PLRs, how to do Ebay and bla bla bla… instead, find a web publishing guru, go for the recommended materials like how to outsource to freelancers, how to maximize your wordpress publishing seo, RSS marketing, social bookmarking stuff and etc.

Your time is one of your greatest assets. So get focused on stuff that will work long term for you and forget about how some people make money from list, make money from selling ebooks and stuff, if those things are not what your business is. If you don’t know what business to go after, then look for those materials that talk about different type of online businesses and how they may fit you.

DRESSED in white and positively glowing with abundant health, Amber Chia, 26, is a visual treat as she strides confidently into the Celebrity Fitness gym at Bangsar Village.

But Amber, who is also the ambassador of Celebrity Fitness and the country’s top model, frankly reveals that she has no illusions about what she must do if she wants to keep her job for hers is a profession known for its unforgiving stand on love handles, jiggly flesh or extra pounds.
“Beauty is 30% godsent and 70% hard work,” insists Amber, who goes to the gym three times a week for two hours of cardio workouts, yoga, pilates and free weights. In addition, she plays badminton on a regular basis.

And weight management, Amber confesses, is something she takes seriously. This means that she has to resist the temptation of spaghetti and cheesecake, her favourite foods.

“I weigh myself every morning to ensure that my weight is constant. On days when I find that I have gained even as little as 500 grams, I make it a point to eat less. One of the ways that I keep tabs on my food intake is to consume two green apples or any kind of fruit before I take my main meal. This not only ensures that I have a good supply of vitamins but it assuages my hunger pangs so that I don’t eat too much,” says Amber, who often opts for salads and lean meats instead of carbohydrate-laden meals.

I grow up in a middle class family. Our parents are employee and earning hard cash so their income is just enough to support our living.

My burning desire to be wealthy started when I read a motivation book ‘A millionaire next door’ in my teenager. I was inspired by the book and I started to earn a fortune and extra income as young as 18 year-old. How to waste your time (life) away? Part 1

Watch football
I have a lot of male friend who likes to watch football. Whenever there is a football league on going, English Premier League, South America League, etc, usually they will come to work the next day with ‘panda eyes’. Thanks to satellite technology, we are fortunate enough to watch the football match live telecast from the other side of the world. Therefore, in order to watch it live, so they have to stay awake in the midnight. I wonder why they sacrifice their sleeping time to watch the game until I found out one day. The reason is simple, so that they can discuss about the game on the next day.
For me, I won’t be wasting my sleeping time to watch it and suffer from sleeplessness for the entire next day. I can’t understand the urgency of watching the game throughout the midnight while at the same time deteriorate my own health. In fact, what’s the point of discussing the clubs’ and the players’ strength and weakness or which club is buying which player? Surprisingly, they know the entire players name by heart, and the schedule of the games. At the end, what’s the benefit to them? Are they going to be a top sports commentator or the high paying speaker for the football club? Or is it going to improve their skill in football game? Or the club is going to pay them for the cheering and merit? But the truth is all they can get is headache, dizzy, blur, sleeplessness, and unproductive the next day. And this also leads to ugly look the next day.
Average a football game is 90 minutes, by watching 2 games a night; you’ll waste about 3 hours a day and entire unproductive days. Not to mention the time wasted talking about the previous football game.

Online chatting
One of the most wasting time and unproductive thing to do online is chatting. You can chat your time away and without realizing the time is passing by. One survey done by a marketing research discloses that a normal chatter will spend average at least 3 hours online chatting each day. If you chat online during your working hour, you’ll waste the unproductive 3 hours each day. 5 days working days will convert to 15 hours wasted for unnecessary routine. So, I politely tell my friends, I don’t chat online, no need to invite me and I hope they will reduce the hours chatting online if necessary.

Reading forwarded email
The very first thing majority of online user will do is checking email; according to a study. Checking email is good in certain extends; email is an important way to communication, building your business and relationship. But a recent growing trend of forwarding ‘rubbish’ email is a waste of time. I receive a lot of so called rubbish email which is chain letter which required me to forward to other so that I’ll be safe from disaster for the rest of the day, or the doctored nude photo of famous idols. You may also receive some forwarded message telling that the email service is going to terminate soon, so you’ll have to forward the message to a hundred of people. To tell you the truth, I ignore all these messages, doesn’t mean anything to me. When I see this message, I clear all this mail just like I clear my junk mail folder without second thought. I think reading these types of mail are a waste of time, and forward to other people is also wasting your time. And not to mention the person who creates the mail that is wasting the most of time. Assume that you check the unnecessary mail once each day, average you’ll waste away 1 hour a day, and 7 hours a week. Think about it whenever you have the urgency to open your inbox.

Rush for bestselling, new movie and newbie.
The recent bestselling Harry Potter 7 has showed an ugly side of people. Because of this release of new book, a lot people had queue up as early as 4 a.m at the bookstore to get there fresh copy of the book. The bookstore opened at 10 a.m, so roughly 6 hours wasted. I am not sure the urgency to read the book until some people are willing to queue during the wee hours for a mere fiction. The book’s price is not cheap, priced at RM 109.90 is a bomb to low income earner. Assuming that an average monthly income of a young executive is RM 1000.00, this book has already exceeded 10% of the monthly expenses.
This also applies to movie release. Many people are willing to wait for hours for a movie ticket but can’t tolerate for a few minutes of waiting at the traffic light. Ironic isn’t it?

Online game
I am sure a lot people play online game. Game is a way out to release tension and build mind agility. I agree. Unfortunately, a lot of addicted gamers wasted a few hours’ online playing games. Not to mention hours of sleepless night trying to destroy the virtual demons, conquering a new territory and killing millions of army over the internet. In the end, I am not sure the benefit they will gain other than mere self-satisfaction.

If you fall into the above categories, please make a change to your life. Now, you may be young in your twenties. Very soon you will realize you are in thirties and forties and regret you have not done anything to boost your income.

I am grateful because I have enough time with my friends, family, working as model, enjoying my hobbies and making money online. I never complain and give excuse that I don’t have time to earn that extra income because I adopt a time management.

Maya Karin also practises green move

GROWING up in Germany, a country known for championing environmental issues, has moulded actress and veejay Maya Karin to become passionate about the environment.
During the one-hour interview in 1-Utama shopping centre in Bandar Utama Damansara, Petaling Jaya recently, the 27-year-old beauty just could not stop talking about the environment and how she wished Malaysians were more pro-active in preserving nature.
A very light-minded question like “Where is your favourite beach?” had turned into an hour-long speech by this advocate of nature.
“I love them all as long as they are clean. Malaysia is blessed with beautiful beaches and rich forests but if we don’t take care of them, soon they will all be gone. The beaches in Penang used to be so clean but look at them now. And Redang. The corals are gone. It’s such a pity. Malaysians don’t realise that they are killing the environment,” she said.
Maya, who was born in Germany, said the country has always put a heavy emphasis on recycling.
“My father, Gottlieb Roelcke, who is very much an environmentalist himself, has always taught us how to love the environment. We would make boats out of the bark of trees and toys from recycled materials. He would take us to the beach and on mountain climbing trips.
“When we go shopping, I would carry my own box or bag to put the groceries in. And every neighbourhood had a one-tonne container for use to discard things that are recyclable.
“I just can’t wait for Malaysia to go big on recycling! Community messages on the radio are not useful if we do not have the facility. I think movies get pushed more than recycling campaigns.
The actress then related the difficulties she encountered while trying to dispose recyclable wastes.
“The envelope holes that they have in recycling bins are ridiculous.
“How can you call that a bin? And these bins are not available in every housing community. I know apartments have them but there is none in my neighbourhood,” said Maya, who lives in Sungai Penchala, Petaling Jaya.
“I know there is one in Mount Kiara because I normally sneak in to throw away the empty bottles and paper.
“But now the guards there wouldn’t even allow me in so I keep a whole load of trash in my car boot as I don’t know where to throw them. My car is like a recycle mobile,” she laughed.
Besides driving around with trash in her very expensive ‘recycle mobile’, Maya also has her plastic food containers and green-coloured shopping bags.
“I always carry them with me in case I want to ta pau food. The makcik in the nasi campur stall that I frequent in Taman Tun Dr Ismail used to laugh at me but I think she has grown to appreciate my effort now since I save her at least 50 Styrofoam boxes a year,” she said.
“When I shop for toiletries, I try not to buy products in plastic bottles. Like soap, for example, I would rather buy them in bars than in liquid form.
“I also love shopping at the pasar malam on Sundays mainly because I can bring my own shopping bags and do not have to use their packaging as opposed to supermarkets where there are layers and layers of packaging even for a small item.
“Shopping at the pasar malam is also cheaper.”
Maya said Malaysians should be more sensitive towards the environment.
“Malaysians should make an effort to care about the environment. There are so many intelligent people and yet the simplest things do not strike them. They just don’t care,” she said.
“Everyone can make a difference by doing little things like not collecting plastic bags when they go shopping.
“And when you pack food back, bring your own container and drink tap water instead of buying mineral water.
“What is wrong in ordering ais kosong? Maybe we are just too liberal with our luxuries,” she added.
Maya said her greatest concern is that Malaysians are getting rid of their real heritage and are replacing it with secondary ecosystems.

Tips from Maya
 Bring your own bags when you go shopping.
 In restaurants, order plain water instead of mineral water.
 Use your own container for take-aways.
 Choose to buy items with less packaging.
 Carry a bottle of water in your car and refill when needed.
 Recycle.
 Do not litter.
 Car pool.
 Shut taps tightly after use.
 Turn off power points when not in use.

In Malaysia, a lot of people are quick to give excuses on why it’s so difficult to make money on the Internet.
When in fact, most of them should really be focusing on more important issues.
And today I learnt about Ladan Lashkari, a young woman from Iran who is actively building her Internet business with no complaints at all. You’ll be able to tell from her life story that it was not a joy ride for her either, but she’s not complaining
Some parts of the story:

Although you wouldn’t know it from her articles and sales letters, Ladan was not born into an English-speaking family. She started learning the language at eight years of age, and devoured every English book she could get her hands on.
Even at such a young age, she began to realize that her fluency in English would open up more doors of opportunity throughout her life. Throughout her teen years, this fervor grew as she tackled the language head-on.

A true entrepreneur, she decided that she wanted to become independent and produce her own income. When her family bought a computer, she quickly began experimenting with ways she could turn it into an income stream. She tried all kinds of business; teaching Windows, graphic designing with PhotoShop, website design, and even learned C++ programming.

I received emails occasionally asking about my experience in making money online (or by blogging to be precise)… I normally will reply to them with a long winded email; and since that my reply is almost the same all the time, might as well post my thoughts here.

This will be a long and messy post… I will write whatever comes into my mind in random.
I received another 2 email requests during the weekend; and guess what, they won’t get a reply because a simple reason… they forgot to mention my name.
I wrote that I replied to all emails… well, not exactly. These days there are lots of emails in disguise that are made to harvest email addresses for spam etc. once you replied ‘they’ will not that it is an active email address and will continue to spam it.

Use my name when contacting me
The best way to differentiate between a genuine email and a spam mail is the greetings. Just say “Hi Cherie” and I will know that it’s a human being writing to me and not some spam bots. Besides it’s the polite thing to do to start a contact with greetings using the person’s name.
If someone is lazy enough to not find my name from my blog… don’t expect me to reply.

So, how much money am I making?
I used to work freelance in various projects… about a year ago I started building more websites of my own, which I aim to provide me passive income.
I am not going to tell anyone the exact figure that I am making online… I didn’t even tell my mum, let alone friends and strangers. What I can say is that I am not rich, and my income is decent enough to replace a normal job.
Do note that this blog is making peanuts only… enough to pay some bills perhaps. You need some better themed blogs to make serious money; personal blogs don’t perform well in this matter.

Know your goal
Don’t get over-excited with the dollar sign… newbies need to have a goal to start their venture into making online. How much do you want to make? Why do you want to do it online than to work in other conventional methods? How much time and investment are you willing to put it to your venture?

It is not easy
It is not difficult to make money online; it is not easy as well. You will need lots of time to learn, test and adapt. Besides if your primarily idea is to make money from blogging, you need time to write as well.
Out of the thousands of bloggers monetizing their blog, I bet that less than 100 are making a decent level of income (at least matching their offline job) from blogging.

Don’t start a blog to make money
There are difference between starting a blog and monetize it; and to start a blog to monetize it. You have to know what is your primarily plan… which is more important… your blog or the money?
If you don’t care about your blog… and the only thing you want from your blog is your money… don’t blog. You are wasting your time.

Find your topic and niche
Find a good topic that you have interest in (even better if you are really good with the topic)… do some research on the growth potential, monetization value and competition.

Join some forums and read more useful articles before starting your blog.
Quite often the success of your blog is already determined by the topic you choose… SEO and other promotion methods are to fulfill your blog potential; it cannot go beyond the limit of your topic if you chose the wrong topic to start with.

Read the right stuff
Read and learn, but make sure you are reading from the right person… what I mean is if you want to make money online, read from some one that is actually making some good money.
There are numerous Malaysian ‘how to make money online’ blogs that started in recent months, and the irony thing is that most of them are making close to zero dollar everyday… why learn from them?
So make sure you read from the right source… in fact, don’t believe in everything I write here, I could be wrong in some stuff.

Be patient and enjoy yourself
Continue to learn and implement, be patient… don’t expect anything to happen within the first 6 months.
Enjoy yourself as well… if you find that it’s not enjoyable, quit blogging.

Be thankful
I have actually read complaints from newbies that experience webmasters aren’t helpful and don’t want to share their secrets. I even received an email calling me selfish for not willing to share more than the basic.

Point is… why should we share our secrets with someone we don’t even know?
Besides, even the basics would work if a person follows the rules correctly. Be thankful that someone is willing to share just the basic.

The appearance of blog-advertising agencies is giving Malaysian bloggers a chance to cash in through online advertising. Bloggers share their thoughts on this new development.
According to a March survey on advertising expenditure by media services group ZenithOptimedia, Internet ad spending (adspend) is predicted to grow at 28.2% this year, seven times more than the rest of the market at 3.7%.

Advertising agencies are expected to spend about US$445bil (RM1.56 trillion) this year and about US$495bil (RM1.73 trillion) in 2009.
In the same timeframe, Internet adspend would grow from 7% to 8.7%, while newspaper adspend will drop from 28.3% to 27%, the report said.

With more people turning to the Internet for all sorts of information, news and services, it is no big surprise that advertisers are also eyeing the online space.
Typically, businesses place ads on professionally-developed content websites with high traffic, such as news portals.

Nowadays, advertisers are also keen to tap into a previously unexplored domain of self-published content sites – blogs.
Though blogs may attract a lot less web traffic than an online news portal but as long as there are viewers for blogs, it becomes a valid medium for advertising.
For bloggers, putting up ads on their blogs would seem like a nifty way to earn some pocket money through user-created content.

A new way to advertise
Timothy Tiah Ewe Tiam, 24, is one of the bloggers who thought he could earn some money through blogging during his varsity years in Britain.
When he and a friend ran a humour-themed blog several years ago, it became quite popular, and they used the advertising system AdSense by Google.
"Our earnings were low and Google made you wait till your account generated US$100 (RM350) before you could start cashing out. We waited forever to get anything out of it," Tiah said.

"So much for wanting to make a fortune from online advertisements," he mused.
When Tiah graduated, he teamed up with Cheo Ming Shen, to set up Nuffnang Sdn Bhd (http://www.nuffnang.com.my/) – a blog-advertising community, the first of its kind in Malaysia.

If you're wondering why it's called Nuffnang; the name comes from a quirky combination of two slang words (spoken in inner city London) meaning "real good" or "real cool", according to Tiah.
Basically, Nuffnang enables local businesses to put up advertisements on homegrown blogs, and for bloggers to make some money off ads from their self-published sites.
"We saw that there was no system here that enables local companies to reach out to the blogging community – advertising on traditional media is very costly and the cheaper method of passing flyers is not effective," said Tiah.

Another advantage of blog-advertising is that it has a more specific audience which advertisers can target for more effective promotions of products, said Josh Lim, director of Josh Lim and Associates.

A month after Nuffnang's opening in February this year, Lim's company set up a similar community called Advertlets (http://www.advertlets.com/) – a play on the words advertising and alerts.

"There's no point paying a lot to put up an online banner ad on a major website when it is not relevant to half its visitors," Lim said.
"Knowing that each blog has its own demographic allows advertisers to put up more relevant ads," he said.

Both sites generally offer a similar type of service and features. Both systems also work almost the same way.
Being in direct competition with each other, these two agencies have been diligently improving their offerings to best each other – much to the benefit of our local blogosphere.

Big bucks in niche blogs
One would think that a blog like Screenshots (http://www.jeffooi.com/), one of the most visited sites in Malaysia, would be raking in thousands of ringgit a month from its ads.
However, its owner, Jeff Ooi told In.Tech that the Google ads on his blog only brings in about US$150-US$200 (RM525-RM700) a month, which is mostly used to pay off its webhosting fees.

Ooi uses AdSense, a contextual advertising system by Google.
Though Google AdSense is commonly used by bloggers, it is not suitable for every type of blog, according to Gareth Davies.

AdSense works by analysing what a site or blog is about and automatically generates contextually relevant ads from a database of advertisers.
The system would then calculate earnings based on several advertising models, including:
If a site or blog contains various subjects from travel to technology, the ads generated would be less relevant compared to a blog that talks about one subject in particular, Davies said.
"Only bloggers who write about very specific topics can use AdSense because the ads generated would be consistent and relevant to the content," Davies said.

Relevant ads means visitors would be more likely to click on them, which generates money for the blogger through the pay-per-click model.
"A specific blog that has high traffic (above 4,000 unique visitors a day) can net the owner about RM5,000 to RM10,000 or more a month," Davies said.
On the contrary, non-specific blogs – even if they have high traffic – would not benefit from the system.

A "general" blog with a fairly decent amount of traffic (around 1,000-2,000 unique views per day) would only generate earnings of around US$30-US$40 (RM105-RM140) a month, Davies said.
Fortunately, the new advertising model by agencies like Nuffnang and Advertlets is excellent for these type of blogs, which make up most of the blogosphere here, said Davies.
"Also, the ads are very localised, so Malaysian visitors would likely click on it as it is relevant to them," said Davies.

According to an online survey conducted by Microsoft MSN in November last year, 74% of Malaysian bloggers said they have no particular agenda for writing their blogs.
However, the big money is still in blogs that talk about specific subjects.

"Some of these bloggers who blog for a living own five or six blogs on different subjects – with each bringing in about several thousand a month, they can earn a cumulative of RM20,000 to RM30,000 monthly," Davies said.

In addition, full-time bloggers could also get paid for sponsored reviews. By signing up their blogs on ReviewMe.com (http://www.reviewme.com/), advertisers could hire them to write reviews for a price, Davies said.

Another way these bloggers earn their keep is through TextLinkAds (http://www.text-link-ads.com/), where bloggers sell the space in their blog posts for advertisers to put up their text links.

For the sake of money
Owner of the Fird's Domain blog, (http://fird.kucing-kelabu.com/) who only wants to be known as Fird, says he has sometimes thinks about becoming a full-time blogger, because of how lucrative it has become.

He thinks blog-advertising is a double-edged sword.
"Sometimes I find that those bloggers who earn money from advertising tend to overdo it," said the 25-year-old technical support staff who works for a multinational company. "You can see that some of them focus so much on advertising efficiency that they clutter their blogs with affiliate links and ads everywhere – in the end it becomes almost impossible to read the actual content," he said.

And then there is the problem of splogs, or spam blogs, which are artificial sites created just to promote other websites.

Sometimes, creators of these splogs even copy content from other sites to be republished as their own posts.

"Most people won't complain if you make money from your own blog, so as long as you don't annoy other bloggers by advertising your blogs on their personal sites," Davies said.
Wong (of kinkybluefairy) agrees.

"Blogging for money is fine, it's just like publishing content in a magazine which you can sell,"
"When it comes to blogging, people can see whether you are writing sincerely or just doing it for the sake of money," she said.

Wong believes if a blog does not have good content, it will eventually lose its viewers anyway.
"However, even if a blog is bad, if it has posts containing keywords it will still show up in search engines," Fird said.

"People will go to the site and it will still get hits in the end," he added.

They were told about story of how other people make millions online. They were told that there are MILLIONS of potential buyer waiting to buy their product. They were told... you know, whatever thing that gets them to be super motivated.

And let's take a step into reality.That person is probably a good husband and father who wants to earn extra cash to support the family.8 hours of his are already 'taken' up by his job. He sleeps 7 hours a day. That's 9 hours left. Let's take 3 hours out for him to eat, shower, drive car, dress up, etc. 5 hours left.I guess he needs to spend time with his wife and children as well. If he's not doing that, then it's defeating the purpose of working hard. 2 hours.He got 3 more solid hours to go. But do you think he's gonna have that 3 hours for work? Nah. He'll probably cut one or two for 'research', reading books, etc.

So how are you going to work on 10 business opportunities when you have a maximum of 3 hours only to spend on a day?Please don't get me wrong. You see, it's definitely achievable to make a living from the internet. Otherwise, I wouldn't dare to teach you and thousands of other people. If it's not, I would be a scammer. So does ALL OF THE GURUS.

So here's what you should do:Get real. And practical.There are the slow and fast ways to make a buck online.If you're in a hurry to make some cash, then stick to methods that can generate quick income. Like, sell something on eBay. That's not too hard.

Got a sale? Good. You can then decide whether you like this business model to grow it to the next level or not. If yes, then immerse yourself with any information you can get about ebay.com's income opportunities. No? Keep on selling. Make enough money for what you want to do.Let's say your dream is to create a software and sell 1,000 copies of it.

That's not going to happen overnight if you're starting from scratch, bucko.And don't forget, you need money to fund your dream. Sometimes Reality sucks, isn't it?

Recently, I was reading a salesletter. Ready for my rant? If not, just skip this session...I couldn't believe that the site shows a check made by other people to sell his course. To me, that's weird. Waaaay too weird.It's like, "Buy my course and I'll teach you how to make $50,000.

By the way, the check you saw on the webpage, that's not mine. It's someone else but I'm just telling you that other people have made it. And oh, he DID NOT read or buy my course before. Me? I don't have a check to show you right now. Sorry. But you can go ahead and buy my course so that I'll have money to pay my phone bills."It's ridiculous how marketers are making money by pushing courses that they don't have proof it works.If you're a marketer, make sure you put proof on your webpage. This helps. If you're planning to use testimonials, get testimonials from clients that have use your product to get result. The " From Guru" testimonials? Some of them don't pass the lie detector.You Got To Be Careful

Either You Have Faith Or FearBe honest with me... do you seek other people's opinion whether you can be successful on the internet or not?If you do, good luck.Seeking opinions and doing a research is two damn different things.Everyone and their dog have their own opinion. Doesn't matter if the guy begging for money on the street or President Bush.

Now, if a question is asked to a beggar or a President about war, I can guarantee you that I'll have two different answers.Forget about opinion. I don't want to dwell in that so long but this leads me to the next point... faith.You'll be successful online is because you have faith or fail because you have fear. That's it.If you have the faith to achieve success, you'll do whatever you can and push away anything that is stopping you including opinions... or giving you fear.I have faith. I can still remember the day I DECIDE to make a living from the internet.

Took me hours.I'm not referring to fear to a tiger that's gonna eat you. It's fear of failure and fear of losing. When you're in doubt, fear will creep on you.

The only way you can overcome this is FAITH. Have faith, my friend. Have faith in yourself and those sincerely wants to help you.I'm Getting Used To It By NowI think Robert Kiyosaki's lessons are pretty much, the same. But I still buy many of his books and read them. And you know what-- Most people will say bad things about him. Especially those who reads his book, attend his seminars, get his coaching program, etc that don't have results.What do I think? Most of them are jealous? Maybe.

The undeniable fact is this-- Most people he taught through books, courses, seminars, etc will FAIL. But at the same time, there will be a few who are going to be successful.The numbers will be few compared to failures.Because it's your life, you can choose to hear from those who gained from Robert's lesson or those who failed.Remember, theoritically you'll bump to people who dislike Robert more because most people do not get success result. It's not Robert's fault-- It's just, fact.As I look back at my milestone, I realized I was one of the losers as well. After reading his books years ago, I'll whined that there's nothing new in there.

But now... I thank him. I thank him for showing me the first step to be financially free. He has "talked" sense to my brain and makes it clear the concept of becoming... RICH.If you read the sub-title of this 'rant', I said that I'm used to it already by now. As many people that I've helped to make a living or earn extra money online now and are grateful, there are still many of them that will say bad things about me and spread rumors. That's fine because it's natural-- just like thousands of people who will criticize Robert Kiyosaki.

Come to think of it, it's really impossible to make everyone becomes successful because most of them don't follow the steps or take actions.Conclusion?Give your best to help your clients. If they still say that you suck, be it and move on.

Focus on those who have faith and trust in you.A Marketer That I RespectJimmy D. Brown. He might be a low-profile chap to you but if you're in internet marketing niche, you can't miss his name. And whenever he launch a new course, I'll be the person to buy it if I can't get from Jimmy for free that time. (smile)Whether you're a newbie or advance marketer, you need to build a list. Caveat?Don't get it if you have unrealistic expectations. If you expect to get thousands of subscribers in the next week, it's time to lower your sights. How many subscribers can you expect? I don't know. There are so many factors involved that I'd have to be a math whize to calculate it. I honestly don't care about "numbers" in terms of how many subscribers are on a list. I only care about the results shown in profit earned. That's why Jimmy teaches it like he teaches it: that a quality subscriber is worth 100X a non-quality subscriber. What he’s going to teach you is how to make money even if you only have 50 subscribers on your list.

Working life is a bed of roses (with the thorns), I’ve been there and done that and what I can say is that each and everyone of us has to find a way to get out of this rat race. If only we could be our own boss and have a say in our life wouldn’t that be nice? Imagine you set your own rules, free from being control by someone else.

In actual fact, we think that we’re making money while working, that is so untrue. Why spend the time helping someone else to making money when you could spend the same ammount of time making those money for yourself? Blogging is very good way of making a few hundred dollars, require little investment or non at all depending on your choice of platform

Does the image on the left gives you the dejavu feeling? This is what it is like working, I’m currently working and when ever there is a mistake, I’ll get scolding, and when mistake are done by other people, I get scolding for no reason. It is really a stressfull life, that is why I’ve decided to set up this blog and make something out of it and in hope others would benefit from the blogging tips below, blogging is the only way out from this rat race. The idea of going to work has changed substantially in the past 10 years. While the norm is still to commute to a physical office, there is a growing contingent who work from home, myself included. Being able to work from home affords a lot of freedoms — I’m sure John knows all about this — as it lets you spend more time with your family, you can save on child care costs, and you don’t have to fight rush hour traffic two times every work day. The arrival and rising popularity of the internet is largely responsible for this growing trend, but it can be difficult to find legitimate work-at-home opportunities. The name of the website is a bit misleading. When I tell people that I’m a freelance writer who works from home, I get more than a little annoyed when the response is, “So when are you going to get a real job?” Working from home is just as legitimate a career as one that gets you to put on a monkey suit and sit in a corner office for 40 works a week.

Following this line of thought, the work at home jobs listed on the WhyDoWork website are just that: jobs. They’re still work, so it’s not like you’re on a twelve month vacation. Some are the telecommuting equivalent of more conventional jobs. When I surfed through the opportunities, I found several that called for “virtual assistants”, or people who act as secretaries from the comfort of their homes. They type up memos, reply to emails, perform administrative tasks, and answer phone calls. Other gigs are a little less conventional, but (hopefully) no less legitimate.

Making Money Online

On the plus side, a membership with WhyDoWork.com is absolutely free, granting you access to an active forum, useful hints and news on the blogs, and a list of work at home employers who have been deemed “a legitimate source for telecommuting employment opportunities.”

The people at WhyDoWork are out to make a buck too, so there’s a fair amount of advertising on the site. They sell eBooks, for example, and many of the pages come with fairly prominent Google Adsense blocks. There are also “featured” employers and opportunities. While the banner ads don’t bother me too much, the Google ads on the front page detract from the professional feel of the site. They also direct people to other work-at-home websites, which may not exactly be the goal of WhyDoWork.com.

If you have a blog or website (that is at least PR3), you may be eligible for a link exchange from WhyDoWork.com. Check the partners page for more details on this, as well as information about advertising on their site.

Work at Home Jobs That Actually Pay

I’m not sure how stringent the screening process is before WhyDoWork.com approves a job posting, and as such, I’m not sure if the “opportunities” are any more trustworthy than the potential scams you find on Craigslist. Interestingly, the bulk (if not all) of the postings link to SimplyHired.com, leading me to believe that the two sites are either owned by the same people or they have some sort of partnership.

Alternatively, jobs can be posted for $49 (for 30 days). This provides a little bit of comfort, because at least you know that the people putting up the openings had to fork out some money. They’ve got to be a tad more serious, right? There are also work-at-home jobs for mystery shoppers, paid online surveys, and other alternative “get paid to” opportunities. All in all, I’d say that WhyDoWork.com is fairly comprehensive.

 Homeworking scams feed off our need to believe that there has to a better way of earning money. Some scams just promise a few extra quid whilst others promise riches and the millionaire lifestyle from stuffing envelopes, to some 'brainless' scheme involving email, to your very own shopping mall website. In a way, it is easier to be sucked into the smaller scam requiring only your £5 or £10 or £30 because you feel you have less to lose and hopefully much to gain.

 Scams involve a clever use of psychology. This is where the fun bit comes into it, but only if you are feeling strong enough to resist! When you see something promoting some unbelievable homeworking opportunity together with pictures of sunset beaches and promises of a 'residual income' or 'Earn £20,000 per month' or even just 'Earn a bit extra' then take a deep breath, make yourself a cup of tea and sit back and read what they have to say. Look at the language they use, the superfluous use of prose and the exclamation marks galore. See how the advert gradually draws you into feeling that this must be a great way to earn money. After a while you get a nose for these things and will see the same scams dressed up in different ways.

 The one thing these scams have in common is the fee you have to pay. It might be called an administration fee; it may be a refundable deposit for materials, or a registration fee or a fee for a directory. The fee may be required in the form of a cheque or it may be part of your making a premium rate telephone call. Now if you were to apply for a regular non-homeworking job through a classified ad would you expect to have to pay an adminstration fee? Of course not! Many homeworking scams involve piecework from painting cottages to assembling electronic components. You start off by paying an initial £15-20 to register and then you are asked to pay another £30-40 for the materials. You do the work as specified but it is then returned to you as being substandard work. In fact you are working with substandard materials (not worth the deposit you have paid) and even if you do exactly as asked they will just move the goal posts so that payment is never made. By this time you are more than £45 out of pocket, have wasted a lot of precious time and only a pile of rubbish to show for your money.

 The other well-known homeworking scam involves envelopes. Whether it is addressing or stuffing them both are scams designed to relieve you of money and if you are to make any money from this then you have operate the same scam!  The Internet has produced a breed of sophisticated scams which at the expensive end involves shopping malls. You are told how the Internet is the place to make millions and to get on board now with your very own turn-key shopping mall which they will produce with your name on it. The bottom line is anything from £1,000 to £4,000 for the pleasure of a useless shopping mall site which no-one will visit and the only way to make some money back is by selling on the scam and getting other people to start their own shopping malls. The cheaper end of the Internet scams involves email chain letters the latest proclaiming, "Parents of 15 year old found $71,000 CASH hidden in his closet". Statistically, it is impossible to earn the amounts that are promised unless every man, woman and child on this planet are connected to the Internet and take part in the same scam!

These con tricks may start with an advert in a newspaper or a shop window, or on a local bus, or with a leaflet through your door.

these are generally followed by a demand for a registration fee. All you get for your money is advice to place adverts like the one you saw. There is no real job. Just a scam to con you out of the registration fee.

Adverts asking for money for home assembly kits: these scams promise pay for making up the goods or your money back.You won't get your money back.You will be told that the goods are not up to standard or given some other excuse.You will not get paid.The people behind the scheme never intended to pay you from the start.

My CTR has dropped a bunch over the past one/two/thee hours/days. Is anybody else seeing this?

Yes, but they are seeing small statistical fluctuations just like you are. With a program as large as Adsense that shows ads as targeted as they are for specific sites, there are always going to be fluctuations. If every person who posted that something was up with Adsense just because of a daily fluctuation in their stats is correct, Adsense had dropped their CTR and payouts dozens of times in the past two months.

Has Google changed the revenue sharing? My revenue/CPC has dropped dramatically over the past one/two/thee hours/days.

See the above answer. I’ve noticed that when one ‘big fish’ ups their advertising budget you can see a big fluctuation in CPCs.

I want to make the ads show up in a new window so the visitors don’t leave my site. How can I do this?

You can’t. If you want somebody to pay you for that type of advertising, please find another source. Adsense advertisers are paying for clicks to their site. If you accept their money by participating in the program you are accepting the fact that you are sending your visitors to their site. That is what they are paying you for.

How can I induce clicks? Can I put something like “Please support our sponsors” above/below the Adsense ads?

No, it’s is against the Adsense TOS. Numerous users have asked Google this exact question and judging from the response, it’s not something that is up for interpretation in any way, shape, or form. Do not induce clicks on your Adsense ads.

Faulty click on your blogs' adsense link

Last week, I brought my laptop along to a meeting with a group of people. So, while we were hanging around, I passed my laptop to another person. She was surfing my multiple blogs and clicking on the links.

Meanwhile, I was chatting with the others. Then, something occured to me. I cut my conversation, rushed to the person using my laptop and told her, ‘WHAT EVER YOU DO, DON’T EVER CLICK ON ANY OF THE LINKS YOU SEE THAT HAS ‘Ads by Google’!”

Huh? Why not?

Because these are advertisements inserted by Google Adsense and if you clicked on those links, then, I am dead!

Really?

Yes, it is that scary. So, you need to be careful that you don’t accidentally use any of those links.

Oh well, that got her paranoid and she stopped surfing my sites altogether.

So folks, remember to make sure that everyone using your PC knows this rule. I have forbidden my nephew from touching my sites altogether. They know how grave the situation is if they should touch those links. Touch it and my income dies.

Having said that, once I got a faulty mouse that clicks on its own. The pointer has gone haywire and once, it led me to a Google Adsense advertiser’s site. I immediately wrote to Google, explained the situation and give them the link that I (or rather my screwed up mouse) had accidentally clicked. They let me off with a warning with the usual TOS - bla-bla-bla you must not click on your ads so-on and so-on.

Moral of the story : Always play clean and nice if you want to make a living online. Doing dirty tricks will not last you long and moreover, do you feel good getting money from cheating?

Every hour that you have their viewbar open earns you some sort of points. Instead of these points being directly tradable for cash at a given rate, they seem to be a sort of "stock" in AGLOCO. These points can be traded in for money, but it all depends on the member base and the number of hours. So basically, the more members agloco has and the more active everyone is, the more money everyone makes. So by getting referrals, you are increasing your earnings in two ways. Google.com earns most of its revenue by allowing other website owners to advertise on their search result pages. All this is managed through a program they call Adwords.

Now you can earn a share of the revenue that Google earns from Adwords by placing these same text ads on your site. In other words, you're helping Google advertise and they pay you a percentage of what they earn.

This program is called AdSense. You can log on to www.google.com/adsense to sign up or to find out more information.

Every website owner should be involved in this. It's just too good of an opportunity to pass up. Even if your site is just for information purposes, you can still participate and make decent money with AdSense -- or at least enough to fund your website.

So if you are one of those people that don't like the idea of paying for a site, this is an excellent way to earn your money back and then some.

Even if you earned as little as $10 in a month, it would more than likely cover some or all of the costs for your web site. Perhaps you are simply looking for ways to add additional revenue to your website, then it's perfect for that situation too.

I know what you're probably thinking...

Now that I understand how AdSense works, I can see that it's a win-win situation for everyone involved, and the bottom line benefits Google. Let me explain...

Since the advertiser's ads are now being displayed on more web sites all over the internet (instead of just Google's site), they are getting much more exposure. More exposure means more clicks and even more traffic for their site over a shorter period of time.

This is good news for Google because the more traffic the advertisers receive, the faster their advertising funds are used up.

AdSense is Google's program for placing its AdWords ads on non-Google websites such as this one.

AdSense lets website owners like you and me make money easily and fast without even selling anything. In fact you can often start earning in under 24 hours and when you get paid, it is Google that sends you a check!

AdSense is an ad serving program run by Google. Website owners can enroll in this program to enable text, image and, more recently, video advertisements on their sites.
